From polkadots to houndstooth, fabric patterns have a long history but the history of patterns in the natural world is much longer – billions of years. This long history makes interesting fabrics.
This apparent weave began with a photo of a paper wasps’ nest. Close inspection reveals a whole range of colors. Wasps made each bit of paper by chewing plant stems and wood then mixing the chewed fiber with saliva. The actual paper is too fragile to handle, but fabric made from an image of it can be worn and washed and worn again.
